COLLEGE AND CAREER COUNSELOR

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services, the College and Career Counselor provides guidance and information to middle school and high school students to prepare them for college, career and life. The individual will build a college and career readying culture by assisting sites in implementing district-wide programs and initiatives. The person will serve as the main source of information for college application, financial aid and scholarship processes. The College and Career Counselor will participate in activities and events that promote A - G and VCUSD graduation rates.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The primary responsibility of the College and Career Counselor is to assist students and their families in identifying colleges, universities, majors, financial aid, scholarships, and career opportunities that meet individual student needs. The College and Career Counselor will work collaboratively with school site counselors to provide direct services to students, organize and operate the High School College and Career Center, distribute college and career materials, disseminate college preparation and career planning information.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

The job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work associated with the position. Duties may include, but are not limited, to those listed below.   • Demonstrate a commitment to the mission, vision, core values, and pillars outlined in the VCUSD Strategic Plan.
  • Provide support to high school counselors to ensure that sites are meeting our identified A-G and VCUSD graduation goals.
  • Develop an academic counseling program at the middle school level so students can navigate and thrive in a high school setting.
  • Conducts classroom presentations and informational workshops at the middle schools to _raise awareness about college and career options beyond high school.
  • Create and implement a college and career action plan which includes academic enrichment, test preparation, academic advising, college financing, college awareness activities, and career exploration activities for students and families.
  • Establish a 8th grade to 9th grade transition program for identified students to track their academic progress throughout their secondary school experience.
  • Work with high school counselors to make sure incoming students have an academic plan from 9th grade to 10th grade that identifies academic goal and proper A - G coursework.
  • Arrange student academic support and intervention services to enable them to be successful in high school.
  • Collaborate with the College and Career Program Manager to plan and coordinate college informational workshops, career day, college and career fairs, field trips.
  • Arrange guest speakers from local business partners, community-based organizations, college and university representatives, and military service recruiters.
  • Update and maintain the district's University of California A-G course list in the UC Doorways.
  • Host informational workshops for students and parents to support them with the college admission process, financial aid completion, and college transition process.
  • Organize career awareness and exploration activities at the middle school level.
  • Maintain and update the VCUSD course catalog on a regular basis.
  • Provide professional development to school staff using best practices to create a college going and career-ready culture.
  • Collect, organize and analyze data to assess the overall progress and effectiveness of the district's college and career readiness programs.
  • Participate in grant reporting activities.
  • Prepare letters, flyers, brochures, mailers and other materials to publicize college and career events to students and families.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and seminars at the local, regional and state levels to learn about best practices related to college and careers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid California Pupil Personnel Services Credential authorizing counseling services, including coursework or formal training in college and career counseling is required
  • A master's degree (M.A. or M.S.) is highly desirable
  • Four years of counseling experience involving extensive direct service to students with college and career focus
  • Experience in a K-12 public school district
  • Bilingual ability is highly desirable

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • College admission requirements including A-G eligibility, financial aid requirements, and preparation necessary for college and careers
  • College and university application process, including two-year and four-year, public and private institutions
  • Financial aid (FAFSA) and scholarship applications
  • Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways
  • Education Code and District policy associated with the position
  • Student support and intervention programs such as Trauma-Informed Care, Restorative Practices, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
  • Data collection and analysis to assess program quality
  • Microsoft Office such as Power point, Word, and Excel
  • Effective oral and written communications skills

  • Communicate effectively with teachers, counselors, students, and parents/guardians

  • Interact with compassion and professionalism with students and families who are unfamiliar with the educational system
  • Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of student records and information
  • Manage CALPADS coding and reporting
  • Research and resolve work-related topics to produce desirable outcomes
