DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Categorical and English Language Learner Program, the Bilingual Tutor assists limited English proficient students in gaining English language skills and advancing academically by offering instructional support in the student's primary language.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Help new students and their parents by explaining school procedures and offering essential "survival" information.
Assess the primary language skills of the student in order to determine appropriate instructional support.
Collaborate with the classroom teacher to ensure that suitable and effective support is provided.
Help the student understand classroom assignments, including instructions and directions.
Translate text materials and assist the student with developing study and test-taking skills.
Assist parents and teachers to communicate about school related concerns.
Assist the student with school-wide problems that might arise.
Help monitor student progress and provide encouragement and support to students. E Other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND CREDENTIALS:

High School graduation or equivalent.
Must have full proficiency in the primary language of the student and proficiency in English.
Professional or volunteer work with children's groups, tutoring, and/or mentoring highly desirable.
Must meet No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirement of an associate of arts degree, forty-eight college credits, or pass an examination.

LICENSES:

Must have appropriate California Driver's License and be insurable by the Districts carrier.
