DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

Working closely with the Director of Special Education/SELPA, the Special Education Coordinator is responsible for overseeing, organizing, and executing intricate tasks associated with students who have special needs. They must adhere to both federal and state guidelines while offering guidance and cooperation to colleagues on effective educational techniques and behavioral interventions to ensure students are included in the least restrictive setting possible. This role requires a wealth of expertise in catering to various disabilities and involves engaging with school officials, educators, learners, and families to enhance the provision of services for disabled students.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Reporting directly to the Director of Special Education/SELPA, the Special Education Coordinator is responsible for organizing, managing, and executing complex tasks related to supporting students with special needs in accordance with federal and state regulations. This role involves consulting and collaborating with staff to implement effective learning strategies and positive behavior supports, ensuring students remain in the Least Restrictive Environment. The coordinator must have advanced knowledge and experience in addressing a wide range of disabilities. Key responsibilities include working closely with district administrators, teachers, students, and families to promote and sustain high-quality special education services.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Plans programs with instructional staff members, coordinates curricular resources, evaluates effectiveness of programs for individuals with exceptional needs, participates in staff development, program development, and innovation of special methods and approaches; provides coordination, consultation, and program development with all related services in special education and Section 504.
  • Consults with staff concerning appropriate learning strategies and positive behavior interventions, to support the student to access instruction, and to make academic progress, in the least restrictive environment.
  • Plans and oversees the development and implementation of programs, policies, and best practices relative to the management of students’ behaviors.
  • Coordinate mental health allocation for mental health support providers and psychologist.
  • Develop and oversee the District’s mental health and social emotional program including a muti-tiered systems of support.
  • Plans and provides, or oversees the provision of positive behavior management interventions and programs, for students, classrooms, and school sites.
  • Provides training and coordinates the work of paraprofessionals and other staff implementing behavior interventions and programs.
  • Makes recommendations to the Section 504 team based on the findings of each assessment and specific to the identified disability as it relates to classroom performance and access to core curriculum.
  • Maintains cooperative working relationships with parents, staff, and other school personnel; serves as a resource/liaison with other agencies and community services and organizations; maintains effective and timely written and oral communications with parents, staff, other school personnel, and community agencies and organizations.
  • Coordinates staff development for special education and Section 504.
  • Supervises and evaluates assigned special education staff.
  • Observe, consult with and assist resource specialists, special class teachers, designated instruction and services personnel and other specialists.
  • Coordinate, schedule and chair individualized education plan (IEP) meetings and ensure that reviews and reassessments are completed.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills.
  • Assist site administrators in supervising and evaluating teachers of concern.
  • Assure compliance with federal and state laws pertaining to special education.
  • Inform, explain and answer questions regarding federal and state laws pertaining to special education and Section 504.
  • Function as a cooperative and contributing member of a dynamic special education and district management team.
  • Provide in-service training in the area of department policies and procedures.
  • Plan, organize and prioritize work activities, collect data and prepare required District/SELPA reports.
  • Attend staff and District meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Administrative Credential.
  • Two (2) years of college-level work including course work in education or social sciences with comparable experience working with special needs youth, preferably in an educational or social service agency setting

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • Federal and state laws pertaining to individuals with exceptional needs.
  • The purpose and function of the local plan for special education
  • Policies and procedures involving the identification, assessment, review/reassessment and individualized program planning for individuals with exceptional needs.
  • Technical aspects of area(s) of expertise
  • Effective principals and practices of supervision and evaluation.
  • Parental rights and due process procedures.
  • Assessment tools and methods for evaluating students with exceptional needs.
  • Behavior intervention techniques and strategies.
  • A variety of instructional strategies and methods.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Mediation techniques used in working with difficult personalities and situations.

Ability to:

  • Work independently with high flexibility.
  • Prepare and maintain files and other materials.
  • Work well under pressure and with a variety of individuals; parent/guardians, clients, employers and various supporting agencies.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer terminal.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other standard office equipment.
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Kneeling, bending at the waist and reaching overhead, above shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files, binders and supplies.
  • Ability to lift and store medical equipment housed in department.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.

ENVIRONMENT: School Sites. Valid California Driver’s License required.

PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS:

Frequency Key; None (1) Occasional - up to 25% of shift (2); Intermittently - up to 50% of shift (3); Frequently — up to 75% of shift
