DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools/Student Support Services, the Athletics Teacher Leader collaborates with school principals to provide guidance and support to the sports programs within the school district. Working alongside site administrators and athletic directors, this individual ensures that athletic programs operate effectively at the secondary level. In contrast, at the primary level, the teacher leader is responsible for planning and executing a sports program that promotes school spirit, pride, and the holistic development of students.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
- Provide guidance and support to the sports program offered throughout the school district. Work together with site leadership to develop a well-run, highly effective sports program that fosters personal and social emotional health.
Secondary Schools:
- Works collaboratively with the principals and athletic directors to address the ongoing needs of their interscholastic athletic programs.
- Monitors the athletic programs at the comprehensive high schools to make sure that they adhere to all California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and North Coast Section (NCS) guidelines.
- Provides principals and athletic directors with updates regarding section and league rules and regulations.
- Ensures that athletic directors, coaches and volunteers follow the Human Resources athletic certification requirements, and perform the scope of their roles and responsibilities in a professional manner.
- Meets regularly with athletic directors to resolve any arising issues surrounding their athletic programs, including parent complaints.
- Schedule meetings, training sessions and workshops to make sure coaches and volunteers can perform their job effectively.
- Works with the athletic directors to verify the eligibility of student athletes, to include academics, attendance, insurance and physical clearance.
- Assists the athletic directors in scheduling contracts for all officials, transportation, equipment and facility usage.
- Supports the athletic directors in the scheduling of home and away athletic events.
- Communicates facilities needs and usage with the maintenance and operations department.
- Checks the readiness of all facilities for teams and spectators prior to game time.
- Provides supervision at all sporting events.
- Addresses accident/injury management with principal, athletic director, and school nurse as needed.
- Serve as an ambassador to community groups regarding the district's sports programs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Elementary and Middle Schools:
- Works directly with the principals to establish and run a sports program at lunch, after school, and during the summer.
- Hold parent and student informational sessions at the beginning of each sports program to inform them about policies, procedures, guidelines, requirements and expectations for participants.
- Conducts a workshop for all coaches and volunteers to make them aware of district policies and procedures to ensure a safe program.
- Work in collaboration with Human Resources and the principal to oversee the recruitment and hiring of prospective coaches and volunteers.
- Ensure that coaches, staff and volunteers have been fingerprinted and are current with CPR, First Aid and all other required certification requirements.
- Organize open play, intramurals, clinics and other sporting activities across the school district.
- Serves as the supervisor of the elementary and middle school sports programs.
- Coordinates officials, transportation, equipment and facility usage as needed.
- Assists principals in the supervision of part-time coaches and volunteers.
- Completes and coordinates the facilities use form to ensure that there are no scheduling conflicts.
- Makes sure that participants possess insurance coverage and physical clearance.
- Coordinates the preparation of sports fields, venues and gyms for sporting activities.
- Arranges an end of the year district-wide awards assembly to recognize sports participants.
- Meets regularly with coaches and volunteers to address any issues regarding the sports programs.
- Facilitates accident/injury management with the principal and school nurse.
- Promotes self-esteem, self-confidence, sportsmanship, and social emotional health through participation in the sports program.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND CREDENTIALS:
- Bachelor's degree related to athletics preferred
- Athletic Director and/or coaching experience preferred
- Three years of supervisory experience preferred
- Knowledge of CIF rules and responsibilities
- Valid credential required
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification

- Communicate effectively with staff, students and parents in both oral and written form
- Work collaboratively with peers, students, parents, and the general public
- Investigate and resolve any potential issues in a timely, amicable manner
- Learn, interpret, apply and communicate rules, contract provisions, regulations and procedures pertaining to the sports programs
- Facilitate athletics in-service training and informational sessions
- Ability to meet critical deadlines, and calmly address pressure-filled situations
- Develop effective conflict resolution strategies
- Create documents using Microsoft Office
- Provide a positive school climate and culture through athletics
LICENSES:
- California Driver's License
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Office and outdoor environment; Multiple school campuses; Fields and Gymnasiums.
